Do I have to Come to Session with Something to Talk About?
Absolutely not!
Of course you can, but you definitely do not have to.
If you have something that you’d like to get off of your chest or something you’d like to dive into, then yes! Let your counsellor know, so that you can stay focused and understand what is happening in your life in a more meaningful and deeper way.
However, some of the best sessions can come from having no agenda in session, and working with where folks are at that moment.
Often times it may not feel like ‘work’ is being done. However, everything is ‘grist for the mill,’ meaning that something that seems ‘meaningless’ to you may actually contain valuable information that can help you and your counsellor move forward on this journey.
In fact, often times, without ‘unfocused sessions,’ we can become so lasered in on the issue that the ‘whole person’ sitting in front of us can be forgotten.
Getting to know folks as a unique individual who brings a whole lot to the table… a whole history of overcoming the odds, dealing with trauma, surviving unhealthy environments, crawling out of dark holes, connecting with others, etc. etc., can be key to dealing with and/or overcoming what you are going through that brought you in for therapy.
So! If you are apprehensive… or nervous… or thinking about cancelling your session because you have ‘nothing to talk about this week,’ try showing up and letting your therapist know this and see where it goes.
It could be one of your most meaningful sessions that you have :-)
